Getting Settled

  • All childcare centres, subsidized daycare centres, non-subsidized daycare centres and home childcare providers are now required to join La Place 0-5.

    You can register to be placed on a waitlist here: La Place 0-5

    For respite or emergency childcare, contact ECO-02 for a referral to one of our community partners.

  • If you wish for your child to go to school in English, you will need to register with Riverside Regional School and the Central Québec School Board

  • You will need to change your license over to Québec within 90 days of arrival in the province. To do this, you need to go to the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec or SAAQ.

    Note: If you are registering a vehicle you purchased outside the province of Québec, it may require an out of province inspection before you can register it with the SAAQ.

  • When living in Québec, learning French is one of the key ways to help you get settled and feel part of the community. There are many language training options here in the region to help you!

  • Local libraries offer incredible community programs that can help you find friends, learn the language and be a part of the community.

  • Unlike other provinces, if you do not have a family doctor you must make an appointment to be seen at the Clinic sans-rendevous.

  • CLSC’s operate in a similar capacity as a hospital. Not all services offered at a hospital are available here, and not all services offered here are available are a hospital.

  • In order to access Québec Health Services, you must register with the Régie de l’assurance maladie. It can take up to 90 days for your application to be processed and so the sooner you apply the better.

    Note: Québec does not participate in inter-provincial billing and you may need to pay out of pocket if you access Health Services before being fully covered by RAMQ.

    It is recommended that you purchase travel insurance to cover the 90-day waiting period for your Québec Health Care, as well as for any time you travel an extended period of time out of the province.

  • Québec has made it easy to register to find a family doctor. The waitlist is long, but so long as you are registered on the Guichet d’accès au médecin familliale (GAMF) you will be placed with a family doctor. Register as soon as you receive your QC Health Card.

  • Québec uses an online portal to allow you to view your medical documents, tests, imaging and medication history. You must register to use this service.

  • You have rights when accessing the healthcare system. ECO-02 has developed a tool to help you remember them.

  • If you feel you have been mistreated by the healthcare system, you have the right to file a complaint. You can do that by contacting the Centre accompaniment et assistance aux plaintes or CAAP. They can help guide you through the complaints process.
